When God Works: Why Your Effort Isn’t the Answer

There’s an unfortunate reality most believers don't seem to realize: a lot of what we call “doing for God” is actually just us doing things without Him.

praying hands on a bible

We pray, plan, act, and then expect God to back what we’ve already decided. When nothing happens, we ask, “Why isn’t God working?”

But the Word flips that question.

Work, Redefined

Jesus makes a statement that should reset everything:

“The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me.” (John 10:25)

Work, in God’s definition, is not effort. It’s not activity. It’s not even good intention.

Work is anything that reveals the Father.

This changes everything.

Because now the issue isn’t how much you’re doing. It’s who is actually doing it.

Jesus makes it even clearer:

“The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do.” (John 5:19)

If the Father isn’t the source, then the work isn’t alive. It’s just human effort.

The Real Problem: Independent Living

Most frustration in the Christian life comes from this one issue:

We act independently, then expect divine results.

We make decisions without consulting God.

We move without waiting.

We act from logic, emotion, or pressure. Then ask God to bless it.

But God doesn’t operate that way.

He doesn’t just join your work.

He initiates His own.

And if He didn’t start it, He won’t sustain it.

Why You’re Not Seeing Results

You can pray all day and still miss what God is doing.

Because prayer isn’t meant to inform God, it’s meant to align you.

Instead of:

  • “God, do this for me”

It should become:

  • “Father, what are You doing here?”

Again. This shift is everything.

Jesus didn’t move only because there was a need.

He moved because the Father initiated something.

That’s why His works carried power and that’s why they produced results.

The Missing Piece: Waiting

Waiting isn’t inactivity.

It’s positioning.

Not waiting for God to act, but waiting for Him to speak and initiate.

“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.”

Strength doesn’t come from trying harder. It comes from alignment.

When God initiates, He also empowers.

That’s the difference between:

  • Striving → exhausting, inconsistent, frustrating

  • Spirit-led work → effective, precise, fruitful

A Shift From Burden to Flow

One of the biggest lies we carry is this:

“I have to fix everything.”

You don’t.

You can’t.

Trying to change people, control outcomes, or force results only leads to burnout.

But when God initiates something:

  • He carries the burden

  • He supplies the wisdom

  • He empowers the action

Now you’re not striving, but instead you’re cooperating.

Working “In His Name” Isn’t What You Think

Doing something “in the name of the Father” isn’t about saying the right words.

It’s about representing:

  • His character

  • His nature

  • His will

Jesus never acted from personal opinion.

“I have come in My Father’s name…” (John 5:43)

Everything He did was consistent with the Father.

That means:

  • Not every “good idea” is God

  • Not every “right action” is Spirit-led

  • Not every “loving act” reflects His love

You can do the right thing the wrong way and miss God entirely.

Relationship Is the Source of Everything

You cannot produce divine work without divine connection.

“No one knows the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” (Matthew 11:27)

This isn’t about information. It’s about revelation.

You don’t learn about the Father through:

  • Systems

  • Education

  • Effort

You know Him through relationship.

And works flow out of that relationship.

The Turning Point

Everything changes when you accept this:

You can do nothing without Him.

That realization doesn’t make you passive. It makes you precise.

Now you:

  • Stop forcing outcomes

  • Stop acting prematurely

  • Stop carrying unnecessary pressure

And instead:

  • You listen

  • You wait

  • You move when He speaks

What Happens When God Initiates

When the Father starts something, clarity will replace confusion and the results will follow obedience.

Just like the disciples fishing all night with nothing, until Jesus speaks:

“At Your word… we will let down the net.”

One instruction from Him outweighs a night of effort.

The goal isn’t to do more for God.

The goal is to let God work through you.

Because at the end of the day, the only works that matter are the ones that reveal Him.

Everything else, even if it looks good, is just noise.
