Take My Yoke: Learning to Work With the Father

Many many of us sincerely desire to serve God, fulfil His will and live meaningful lives. Yet it is possible to do many things for God without truly walking with Him. We can make our own plans, follow our own understanding and then ask God to bless what we have already decided to do.

Father Focused

Jesus did not live independently from the Father. He spoke the Father’s words, performed the Father’s works and submitted Himself to the Father’s will. His entire life made the Father visible.

As sons of God, this is also our primary assignment: to reveal the Father through the way we speak, work, respond and relate to others.

Sonship Must Remain Father-Focused

We have often spoken about our identity as sons of God, but sonship cannot be understood apart from the Father.

We are sons because we come from a Father.

Therefore, to live successfully as a son, we must know the Father, understand His nature and learn how to walk with Him. When we lose our focus on the Father, sonship can become nothing more than a spiritual title. However, when we know Him personally, our identity begins to influence how we live.

Jesus taught that our conduct should reveal what our Father is like. For example, He explained that we should not greet only those who greet us. Even sinners do that. Our Father is generous, compassionate and welcoming, so our behaviour should demonstrate His nature.

This means our actions cannot be controlled only by our feelings, preferences or comfort. We must remember the One we represent.

The question is no longer simply, “How do I feel about this person?”

The greater question is, “How can I reveal my Father in this situation?”

Renewing the Mind Through Knowing the Father

Fear, anxiety, loneliness and rejection often reveal areas where our understanding of the Father must grow. Jesus taught us not to worry because our heavenly Father knows what we need.

Forgiveness deals with past offences, but the mind must still be renewed. Painful experiences can train us to expect rejection, failure or disappointment, causing old patterns to influence present situations.

We cannot think according to the old man while expecting to experience the life of the new man. Instead of living as victims of the past, we must develop a Father-focused mind, work faithfully and trust God to reward integrity.

Listen With the Posture of a Child

In Matthew 11, Jesus thanked the Father for revealing truth to babes.

A child understands that he or she must be taught. In the same way, we must approach the Word of God saying, “Teach me. Feed me. Show me what I have not yet seen.”

Familiarity can become an enemy of revelation.

Hearing the same words does not mean we have fully accessed the truth contained within them. God often teaches us line upon line and precept upon precept. A truth we heard last year may open to us in a deeper way today because we have grown, matured or entered a different season of life.

The condition of the listener matters.

Hunger, expectation and humility create room for understanding. Therefore, we must train ourselves to listen as though we have never heard the message before.

Come to Me and Learn

Jesus said:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

He then said:

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me.”

Jesus is the Son who reveals the Father. Therefore, when we learn from the Son, we are learning how to walk with the Father.

The biblical image of a yoke helps us understand this relationship. In agricultural practice, a young and inexperienced ox could be yoked to an older, trained ox. The experienced ox knows the farmer’s voice, understands the commands and walks at the correct pace.

The younger ox learns by walking beside it.

When the older ox stops, the younger one stops.

When it turns, the younger one turns.

When it moves forward, the younger one follows.

The yoke makes independent movement difficult. The two animals has to walk together.

This is the picture Jesus gives us of sonship.

The Yoke Teaches Us to Walk With the Father

Taking Christ’s yoke means submitting to the Father, learning from Jesus and refusing to carry life’s responsibilities alone. The Father determines the direction and pace, while our responsibility is to listen, trust and obey.

As we walk with Him, we learn to recognise His voice and respond with the confidence that He will not fail us. Instead of relying on our own strength or reacting from emotion, we ask, “Father, what should I do, and how can I work with You?”

Working with the Father may require us to deny ourselves, remain gentle, wait patiently or show love when we would rather retaliate. However, obedience makes room for His work to become visible.

The yoke does not remove responsibility, but it gives us rest because we are no longer carrying the burden alone. As we yield to the Father, He strengthens, guides and changes us, producing humility, gentleness and peace within us.

It Works Through Relationship

Walking with the Father is not a religious formula.

It is not merely learning biblical principles and attempting to apply them without Him. Even truth can be practised independently if there is no living relationship with the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit guides us into truth. He reveals what we have not seen, changes the way we think and then teaches us how to practise that truth in real situations.

He may expose an orphan mindset when we are afraid that there will not be enough.

He may remind us that we have a Father when we feel abandoned.

He may correct our methods when we are responding out of anger.

He may tell us to wait when anxiety is pushing us to act.

This is how truth becomes life.

The Father must be brought into our everyday world. Our finances, parenting, work, relationships, decisions and challenges. We must engage Him, ask questions, listen for His instruction and obey what He reveals.

Take the Yoke

Jesus gives the invitation, but we must take the yoke.

We must decide, “I will no longer live independently. I will not merely work for God. I will work with my Father.”

This means remembering and obeying the instructions He has already given us. It means allowing Him to initiate, lead and correct us. It means trusting His love, provision, protection and guidance.

Our Father has not left us alone.

He is our provider, protector, defender, comforter and guide. As we grow in our knowledge of Him, we exit the thinking of the old man and begin to live according to the new man.

Sonship is not simply an identity we confess. It is a relationship we live.

May we receive a fresh hunger to know God as Father. May the Holy Spirit reveal His nature to us and teach us how to walk with Him. May we discover that freedom is not found in independence, but in loving submission to the Father.

The load may be heavy, but we do not carry it alone.

Take His yoke, learn from Him and walk with the Father.
